Of the three Bulldog restaurants in the Twin Cities (the other two are located in Uptown and Northeast Minneapolis), the Saint Paul location is both the newest and my favorite. Since it opened in October of 2008, The Bulldog Lowertown has become one of Saint Paul’s hotspots. With an impressive beer selection and some of the Twin Cities’ best bar food, The Bulldog was named “The Twin Cities’ Best Place to Break Those Foolish New Year’s Vows” by City Pages in January of this year.
The Bulldog’s simple and laid back atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to hit for happy hour, a casual dinner, or to catch a game with friends. Located across the street from Mears Park in the lowertown neighborhood of Saint Paul, The Bulldog is a great place to hit up before or after Mears’ weekly free concert series, held every Thursday throughout the summer (they even sell hot dogs at some concerts). Whether it’s for the beer, the food, or the hassle-free atmosphere, The Bulldog Lowertown is definitely worth a visit.
Where: 237 East Sixth Street, St. Paul, MN
Lowertown St. Paul, across from Mears Park on the northeast corner. There is metered parking available on adjacent streets.
When: Open April through October
When: Open everyday (except major holidays) 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Cuisine: Bar food, including a diverse selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs. There are several vegetarian options available. They also now serve Sunday brunch beginning at 11am. The dessert menu is limited but try a warm chocolate chip cookie for 75¢ or a rootbeer float (not included on website).
What to Have: The Stadium Nachos with spiced pulled chicken were nothing short of exceptional, but are best shared with a group of four or more if ordered as an appetizer (also, be sure to eat ‘em fast before the cheese soaks into the chips). The Which Came 1st and BELT sandwiches are both very good, as is the Chicago Dog. But be sure, when ordering a sandwich, dog, burger, or entrée, to ask for one of the several flavors of Tator Tots over fries (my favorite is Cajun).
Atmosphere: Laid-back and uncomplicated. Take advantage of the 22” shuffleboard, 2 dart boards, and numerous flat screen TVs.
Cost: Salads, Sandwiches, Burgers, Entrees, and Dogs: range $4.50-$12
* Be sure to check the website for an updated list of specials…there are many!
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
The Bulldog Lowertown has a selection of over 100 beers, so they are sure to have something you would like. My favorites are any of the Beer Flights, but in particular. The Crafty Flight, which allows you to pick five from a list of ten different beers. My favorite of this list is Two Brothers Cane and Ebel Red Rye.
