While in search of a location for this month’s review, and always open to new, interesting and different venues, I came upon Sparks in Bryn Mawr. Prior to this day I had never been in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, frequented Sparks, or its owners’ affiliate restaurants al Vento and Rinata, I was in for a treat!! North on Penn only a few blocks off of I-394 at 230 S. Cedar Lake Road, Sparks is tucked comfortably into an ideal street corner location. Being first time vistitors of Sparks we relied heavily on our servers recommendations; let the feast begin.
The small plates were perfect for sampling, starting with a cup of the Butternut Squash Soup with curry sour cream, Lamb Merquez Sausage with Harissa, Fresh Zita with cheese (our favorite), Roasted Brussel Sprouts with bacon & walnuts and Bulgogi Tacos with Kimchi (really, Korean Tacos who knew?!). What followed was one of Sparks Wood Fired Pizzas chicken with pepper walnut pesto and goat cheese. This was followed by desserts, House Made Apple Crisp with vanilla gelato and Peach Sorbet. Thoroughly impressed with all aspects of Sparks we took to conversation with our server. Soon we were introduced to Jonathan one of the owners who we thanked for his commitment to providing a dining alternative which we loved. Take a trip to Sparks, check out Bryn Mawr and smile, we did!
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
How could November pass without selecting Surly’s Darkness as this month’s beverage choice?! Darkness, a Russian Imperial Stout on tap in bars, it sells out in hours and lucky beer stores in one day; Darkness is an annual must. As with many RIP’s they taste great but get even better with age, so if fortunate enough to have purchased two, save one for next year.
Notes from surlybrewing.com: This massive Russian Imperial Stout brings waves of flavors; chocolate, cherries, raisins, coffee, and toffee. We add a touch of hops to make this delicious brew even tastier.
