My favorite small town near the Twin Cities is Hudson, WI. This month’s review includes two new venues, an Italian-American restaurant, Postmark Grille and American Sky Beer by Hudson Brewing Company.
Postmark Grille is located in the former Hudson Post Office. The building was completely renovated but much of the Post Office ambiance was spared, including its vault which doubles as a wine room and special event dining area. The Postmark menu is vast which complicates selection, after my forth visit in a month I am pleased to report that Postmark is an ongoing hit. Thus far my “you have to try these” favorites are the Italian Nachos, crisp fried pasta chips, diced Roma tomatoes, Mozzarella and Parmesan Cheeses, fresh basil, olives and balsamic glaze along with Italian sausage or chicken, the Deli Turkey Sub, grilled turkey, Canadian Bacon, Swiss Cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onion and mayo on a Postmark homemade roll, and the Spitini, thin strips of sirloin steak, brushed with olive oil and breadcrumbs, stuffed and rolled with salami, provolone cheese and green onion, then grilled with bay leaves.
I have eaten pizza at hundreds of locations, and I love Black Sheep and Pizzeria Lola. First, it’s all about the crust, then the sauce, the baking technique, and finally the toppings. The Postmark menu reads as follows “Our Pizzas are made from scratch. 100% Real Wisconsin Cheese. Our specialty is a hand-tossed crust. Thick/thin crusts are also available upon request.” The Classic Margarita at Postmark includes the following: a hand tossed crust, marinara sauce, Roma tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil, fresh basil on a bed of fresh shredded mozzarella. It is SIMPLE and OUTSTANDING!! There are dozens of other great menu offerings; the Prime Rib Sandwich, Beer Cheese Soup and their Pasta were eaten with just as much gratitude. Finally, Postmark Grille is family owned and operated and all of their food is homemade from scratch.
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
After a late lunch or early dinner at Postmark make the short drive to American Sky Beer. Their tap room known as “The Hanger” is open Thursday and Friday from 4;00 until 8:00 and Saturday from 2:00 until 8:00. They offer six varieties of custom brewed beers, three of which are flagships of American Sky and the other three are rotating specialties. Each is available in pint glasses, a flight to sample all six and growlers to go. This place is not fancy; it’s a brewery in a warehouse in an industrial park. It is also some of the finest beer available in and around the Twin Cities. When you visit make certain to say “hello” to the hard working and creative owners of this spectacular brew house, Molly and Greg.
American Sky Beer occupied booth #16 at the St. Paul Winter Carnival Beer Dabbler held on Saturday the 26th of January this year. The Beer Dabbler was hosted by over 100 breweries serving well over 300 different beers. Of the many-many-many beers we sampled, American Sky’s USA IPA was one of the VERY BEST!
