Blackbird Cafe

Urban dining at its finest is what Blackbird resonates!  I now have so many favorites I am challenged to reacquaint as often as I would like, and Blackbird just adds to the list. Located at the corner of 38 and Nicollet in Minneapolis, street parking and a great glass line welcomes you to an atmosphere that will thrill. The savory menu offerings and unexpected great craft beers make this a “must come back often”!

On this evening I am joined by six of my long time great friends for an evening of discussion, beverages, food and fun! We begin at the bar to survey Blackbirds “TAPS= ever-changing…stop in for the current selection” and were shocked to find Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout.  This fine brew is currently ranked as the 16th best beer in the world by Beer Advocate and at 15% ABV it’s a sipper.  Also of great interest was Blackbird’s Beer Flight, a sampling of 6 of their taps for $12.00.

Moving on we agreed that apps are on task and order from the Snacks section of the menu: Crispy Duck Rolls with sweet chile sauce, Chicken-Lemongrass Potstickers in a garlic ginger broth and Fried Olives which are stuffed with salami.  Each of the Snacks were original with the Stuffed Olives being the winner.  Once seated we were on to Small Plates consisting of Brussels Sprout Hash with shallot and sage butter and a Fried Calamari salad, served with baby arugula, tomato, raisins, red onion and bacon.  Next, the menu consists of Entrees and Specialty Sandwiches along with sides.   We agreed on Entrees which include two staples and a Market Fish and Market Meat.  On this evening one chose the London Broil, petit tenderloin with truffled gnocchi and grilled asparagus the other six selected either the Market Fish, pan roasted Snook with jasmine rice, baby bok choy and shaved asparagus salad or Market Meat, pan Roasted Duck Breast with wild mushrooms, roasted sunchokes and cherry compote with an arugula and celery root salad.  I sampled each and was thrilled by all; Blackbird was a hit, 7 guests and 7 happy diners.  Our bartender and severs were pleasant and knowledgeable and the pace was perfect.  Another winner!!
