North of I-94 and East of Downtown St. Paul is Payne Avenue. The ethnic diversity in grocery, restaurants and businesses is unlike most neighborhoods in the Twin Cities and I would guess not many of you have driven this avenue. A top secret first stop should be Morelli’s Market, a Liquor/Wine/Beer Store with a Deli and Butcher Shop. The low price of their goods will shock and Morelli’s home-made frozen pizza is fabulously unlike any grocery store version. Be prepared however, no credit cards are accepted, cash or check only. Heading north we pass Ward 6, a favorite east side restaurant and previous Ritter Review. On this evening, the five of us including the newest member of the family, 11 week old River William Reisenauer are ready to indulge at one of St. Paul’s newest thrills, Tongue in Cheek, East Side. Tongue in Cheek boasts an incredible liquid Happy Hour with four types of Chelada Beers ($4.00 each) and six Cocktail Teasers ($2.50 each) or a flight ($12.00). We bypass the bar and proceed to the dining area to begin our initiation at Tongue in Cheek. Starting with the dinner menu, we began with two-bite wonders called TEASERS, Sweetbread, honey mustard, horseradish, date | East Fried Pride, porkbelly, stonefruit, sesame, peanut | Scallop Crudo, wasabi, apple, fried garlic | Goldi-Lox, gravlax, horseradish, dill, salmon roe | Charred Feta, strawberry and black pepper jam. Off TO SHARE we order the Steamed Pork Buns and seriously nothing can completely describe this thrill. Three taco looking, melt in your mouth, steamed buns filled with fried porkbelly, crisp veggies, radish, lightly pickled cucumber and secret sauce, simply amazing! Followed by a bowl of the Soup Du Jour, pureed sweet potato, basil oil, deep fried bread topped with onion and pork, WOW! Finale of PIECE DE RESISTANCE, The Cheeseburger, cheddar, house pickles, arugula, aioli | Mac N’Cheese, three cheese, arugula, prosciutto | Roasted Duck Boob, smoked cheddar grits, fennel, coffee-bacon foam, “TA DA” and completely well done!
Tongue in Cheek also offers a 7 course tasting menu in both Carnivore and Herbivore with or without Libations and an assortment of Let Them Eat… dessert items. A special thanks to our server Mimi for her patience and smile, check out Tongue in Cheek and enjoy!!
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
Ballast Point, San Diego, CA | Grapefruit Sculpin | 7.0% ABV | 70 IBU| IPA
From one of San Diego’s finest breweries here’s a look to warmer months. They’ve taken their outstanding on it’s own IPA and added a seriously citrus-y kick of grapefruit.
Notes from the brewery: “Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.”
