During lunch at Revival in Minneapolis (a prior review and soon to open another location on Cathedral Hill in St. Paul), I sympathized with the unfortunate people in the waiting line and noticed a bear sign across Nicollet. It stuck with me, and two weeks later Rossy and I decided to check it out. To our great delight we had a fantastic experience at The Lowbrow. Both Revival and The Lowbrow have restricted parking options but The Lowbrow has more table and bar seating. The two of us, being first timers, decided to sit at the bar and get the real low down from the servers on what’s “must have” on the menu. Let’s jump in!
We began with SNACKS of REAL JALAPENO POPPERS, fresh jalapenos stuffed with jack and cream cheeses fried perfectly (spicy, flavorful, definitely homemade and incredible) | DEVILED EGG, an Organic deviled egg (just like Mom’s, bet you can’t just order one) | TOFU TACOS, seasoned, fried tofu with spinach and scallions; topped with salsa and guacamole and served on corn tortillas (perfect preparation and vegan). Following were SOUPS, of BISON CHILI, spicy chili served with house made tortilla chips and garnished with sour cream and cheddar cheese (hold the cheese please) and TOMATO BASIL as their Soup of the Day. We finished with shared plates of the HAM AND BRIE MELT, ham, brie, caramelized onions served on griddled sourdough and HOMEMADE FISH STICKS, crunchy sticks of flaky wild-caught cod, coated in panko and fried and served with fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw (definitely The Lowbrow’s Signature Menu Item). The Lowbrow also boasts homemade desserts and an adequate beer and wine list. This was a good Friday afternoon, lunch with a friend, a new food experience in The Lowbrow, and a taste of Surly’s newcomer Xtra Citra!
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
If this weather isn’t making you think summer maybe this beer will. Perfect pairing for a summer day out on a patio! Notes from the brewery, “You’d think hops in the bright sunshine would make us happy, but you’d be wrong. It just makes us Xtra-Surly. This bright colored session ale Xplodes with Citra hop flavor and aroma, in a deliciously drinkable brew.
Put your shades on, and enjoy an Xtraordinarily bright beer Xperience! OK, enough with the X’s. We promise.
This sessionable, low ABV Pale Ale’s flavor and aroma are driven by Citra hops. Expect refreshing tropical, citrusy hop notes with a pleasant bitterness & body.”
