When Jess asked me if I liked French food, my surprising response was, “I don’t know!” Enter St. Genevieve, a restaurant with no website but a sufficient Facebook page with an “About” section to provide an introduction: “A Parisian-inspired buvette in the heart of the Lynnhurst neighborhood. Champagne: all day, every day.” I said why not, and now I’m grateful to Jess not only for the suggestion, but for joining me on my first of many visits, making St. Genevieve a fresh “go to” of mine! A preferred benefit of just one menu is that all selections are available at lunch and dinner. A simpler/smaller menu is provided between lunch and dinner in addition to a brunch menu on weekends (which includes Cervettes Créoles, smoked grits, shrimp Creole barbecue and celery). I am told a weekend dinner may be a challenging wait, but an 11:30 lunch is perfection. Thus far, some favorites are SMALL PLATES: Morilles et Gnocchis Parisian, morel mushrooms, Paris gnocchi, sherry reduction & crispy chicken skin | Crabe à Carapace Molle Frite, fried soft-shell crab, avocado & watercress | Tartare d’Agneau, lamb, Za’atar, Moroccan black olive & winter citrus | Terre et Mer, scallop, duck sausage, green papaya & Nu’o’c Cham | and the excellent Carrottes Rôties, carrots, smoked carrot purée, fava beans and fromage blanc.


TARTINES (a French open-faced sandwich, translated as “toasts”): Madame Red Table Jambon (ham) Royal, Raclette Cheese & sunny side up egg | Saumon Fumé, Uni butter, house smoked salmon & sorrel.

LARGE PLATESChoucroutte au Canard, duck breast & confit, red potato, pickled red cabbage & Moutarde de Meaux | Filet de Porc Rôti, pork tenderloin, cheese grits, celeriac remoulade, and onion puff.

While the DESSERT offerings look to be special with a Rhubarb TartButterscotch Crème BruleeCoconut Meringue and Orange Chiffon, thus far I have settled for St. Genevieve’s amazing homemade salted caramels presented along with the dining tab! I have also not vetted the wine/champagne offerings, but they are extensive. You can’t help but smile at the Coco Chanel quote on the champagne offerings, “I only drink Champagne on two occasions, when I am in love and when I am not.

If I have had a bad meal you won’t hear from me, as only the best meals are worth sharing. St. Genevieve is truly a special place, try it!

Founders Brewing Co.   Grand Rapids, MI | Mango Magnifico con Carlo 2016| 10% ABV | Fruit Beer

MM2016This one packs a punch and is a great one to share with friends.   Notes from the brewery, “Mango Magnifico is a high-gravity fruit beer brewed with mango and a touch of habaneros to add just the right amount of heat. The delicate flavors imparted by the sweet richness of the mango are punctuated perfectly by the subtle heat of the habaneros, proving that fruit beers do not have to be one-note. Each 750mL bottle of this 10% ABV ale is both sophisticated and refreshing, making it the perfect beer to share… or to keep all to yourself.
