The recently opened Handsome Hog makes another delicious statement for St. Paul’s Mears Park – bring your hunger to this place! Wasting no time, our party of seven chooses a large high top table in the bar area to view the Mid-Day Happy Hour menu offered daily from 2:00-5:00. We order three servings of Bourbon & Smoke Wings, Dry Rub (the way wings actually come off the chick – all three sections in one piece) and the Meat Bar, the daily selection of cured and smoked pig served with fresh bread, house pickles (including peaches this day) and mustards, carved and prepared bar-side and offered in small, medium and large.
After HH, and as our server carefully guides us through the house specialties, we choose to order most of them: STARTERS of Whole Roasted Hog Jowl and Pork Belly followed by ENTREES of 24 hour Smoked Beef Brisket – texas toast and house pickles; Bourbon Braised Pork Cheeks – buttermilk biscuits, sunny side duck egg, crispy pig’s ear, pickled squash blossom and chili oil; Baby Back Ribs – more toast and pickles; and Low Country Shrimp N Grits – smoked gouda anson mills grits, grilled okra, tomato & house andouille. We treat ourselves to one veggie – Whole Roasted Cauliflower – then top it off with all four of the DESSERTS: Enchanted Chocolate Bog – frozen chocolate mousse, basil cake, strawberry sorbet & sesame candy; Grilled Sweet Corn Cake – kaffir lime custard, jalapeno honey blueberries & corn ice cream; Smoked Peaches & Cream – vanilla cremeux, grilled peaches, smoked candied almonds, peach ice cream & smoked almond milk; and the Cheese Board – goat cheese ribbed with dried porcini mushrooms, fermented honey, benne crackers and shitake bacon.
This was a wonderful feast with great friends – many thanks to Handsome Hog for providing a new venue for those of us who appreciate the pig!!
Bill’s Beverage of the Month
The magical, mystical 12th of Never is a blend of Old and New School hops that play bright citrus, rich coconut, and papaya-esque flavors, all on a solid stage of English puffed wheat. Tropically hoppy. Light, yet full-bodied. Bright and citrusy. The 12th of Never Ale is everything we’ve learned about making hop-forward beer expressed in a moderate voice. Pale, cold, slightly alcoholic and bitter. It’s all we know.
These 12oz mini-kegs (AKA cans) are an exciting new option for us, and we are stoopid stoked at the opportunity for y’all to take us to all those new, nelophobic locations…
